IPS Sines School of Sustainability, Industry and Digital Technologies
Presentation
The Sines School of Sustainability, Industry and Digital Technologies – Polytechnic University of Setúbal is an interdisciplinary institution designed to meet the need for highly qualified professionals for the logistics, energy, digital, and industrial infrastructures located in that region, which are of national and international significance.
In this context, a continuous offering of public higher education will be made available for the first time in the Alentejo Litoral region, featuring a broad range of educational options, including micro-credentials, advanced vocational technical courses (CTeSP), bachelor’s degrees, graduate programs, master’s degrees, and the possibility of doctoral programs, all designed to address the challenges of the region’s logistical, energy, digital, and industrial transitions.
The Polytechnic University of Setúbal aims to offer prospective students an educational model based on the principles of internationalization, pedagogical innovation, academic well-being, and integration into real-world learning contexts, in collaboration with its research units and European university alliance E³UDRES², of which it is a founding member.
This educational approach also reinforces the mission of the Polytechnic University of Setúbal to promote community-oriented higher education that is closely aligned with the needs and strategic potential of the region, contributing to the development of human resources, innovation, and the sustainable transition of the industrial, logistics, and energy cluster in Sines and the Alentejo Litoral region.
Courses
In this initial phase, the School will build upon its current educational offerings, such as professional higher technical diploma (CTeSP), graduate programs, and short courses, thereby establishing a solid foundation for professional training in the region.
In a subsequent phase, bachelor’s degree programs will also be offered in the fields of Applied Data Science and Critical Infrastructure, as well as a master’s degree program in Port Logistics, thereby systematically expanding the range of advanced education available.
Alongside this expansion, plans are in place to create a new CTeSP in the field of Water Sports and to potentially relocate existing training programs currently offered at the Setúbal campus, such as the CTeSPs in Information Systems Technology and Programming, Cloud and Cybersecurity, and Tourism Management, thereby strengthening the institution’s presence in the region and its ability to address the specific needs of the Alentejo Litoral.
Why study in Sines?
Sines offers a unique setting for study, combining a strong connection to the sea with a rapidly evolving industrial, energy, and digital ecosystem. The municipality boasts infrastructure that is rare in the country: a multifaceted port situated on international shipping routes, the nation’s only liquefied natural gas terminal, a major fishing port in the Alentejo, and one of the few recreational marinas in the region. Added to this is an exceptional natural heritage, part of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, featuring high-quality beaches and excellent conditions for water sports.
At the same time, Sines is establishing itself as one of Portugal’s largest industrial and logistics hubs, with strategic sectors such as energy, petrochemicals, metalworking, port logistics, and, more recently, renewable energy and biofuels. The presence of the EllaLink submarine cable and SinesTECH—the Innovation Park and Data Center—reinforces its position as an Atlantic digital hub, creating opportunities for technology companies and for advanced training in emerging fields. This economic diversity translates into a dynamic, multicultural environment with strong demand for qualified talent.
Studying at the IPS Sines School of Sustainability, Industry and Digital Technologies means being at the heart of a region where the sea, industry, energy, and digital innovation converge. It is a region offering real learning opportunities thanks to its proximity to leading companies, a high quality of life, and a safe and welcoming environment for students.
Accommodations
The IPS Sines School of Sustainability, Industry and Digital Technologies will be located in the Municipal Student Accommodation Complex, next to Poeta Al Berto High School.
The residence will provide 47 beds at affordable prices for students who have had to relocate, helping to ensure adequate housing close to campus.
This investment represents a long-term commitment to making higher education more accessible, to the personal and professional development of citizens, and to strengthening community ties in the region.
