  • Degree objectives

    The Master's Degree in Advanced Practice of Physiotherapy in Neurology presents a study plan that aims to meet the training needs of Physiotherapists working in the area of neurological conditions. The program was defined so that, throughout the first year, master's students have contact with users (real or simulated) in the Curricular Units (CU) of Advanced Practice in Neurological Physiotherapy I and II, promoting the integration of knowledge and clinical skills developed from other CUs (e.g. Exercise applied to neurological conditions; Neuroscience and motor control; Technology combined with Physiotherapy in Neurology; Advanced management of chronic neurological conditions). Thus, simulated and situated learning will be promoted, with discussion and analysis of its transfer to different contexts of practice. Models of physiotherapy practices in neurology will also be discussed and reflection on its professional practice will be promoted.

    With this course, master's students are expected to demonstrate: - Advanced clinical reasoning ability, analyzing the results of the physiotherapy assessment in neurological conditions and complex and/or unpredictable situations; - Ability to develop and implement individualized intervention plans, integrating its critical analysis of the available evidence, risks and benefits, to meet the needs of the user/family/caregivers; - Self-assessment of their practice through critical reflection of their performance and feedback to peers/others, using that reflection to inform future practice and professional development; - Ability to design, plan and conduct research/quality improvement projects to respond to complex problems, as well as to disseminate their results, contributing to innovate research processes and professional practice in neurological conditions.

  • Career opportunities

    The Master's Degree provides learning opportunities for advanced professional practice in physiotherapy in neurological conditions. Its work can be carried out in different contexts of practice, such as clinics, hospitals, differentiated centers for intervention in neurology (e.g. institutions of the National Network of Continued Care; private centers), health centers, support entities for neurological patients, among others. Additionally, the course promotes professional development, contributing to other career opportunities, such as professional leadership, teaching, scientific research or academic progression.

  • Recognition of prior learning

    Recognition of prior learning is carried out in accordance with the Academic Regulations of the Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal.

  • Admission requirements

    In accordance with the conditions of access defined in paragraph 1 of article 17 of Decree-Law No. 74, of 24 March 2006, the following may apply for this course leading to a master's degree: - holders of a bachelor's degree or legal equivalent in Physiotherapy; - holders of a foreign higher academic degree in Physiotherapy, conferred following a 1st cycle of studies organized according to the principles of the Bologna Process by a State adhering to this Process; - holders of a foreign higher academic degree that is recognized as meeting the objectives of the bachelor's degree in Physiotherapy by the jury appointed by the President of the Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal (IPS), in accordance with the provisions of Decree-Law No. 66/2018, of 16 August; - holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum, which is recognized as attesting the ability to carry out this cycle of studies by the IPS.
