  • Degree objectives

    The Master's Degree in Teaching in the 1st Cycle of Basic Education and in Mathematics and Natural Sciences in the 2nd Cycle of Basic Education is structured to develop a broad, in-depth and articulated set of knowledge, allowing: - To provide solid professional knowledge, in the scientific, pedagogical and didactic dimensions, which allows planning and implementing quality practices as teachers of the 1st cycle and of Mathematics and Natural Sciences in the 2nd cycle. - To promote a broad understanding of the knowledge that integrates the legal documents that define the curriculum prescribed for the 1st and 2nd cycles, including their vertical and horizontal articulation. - To provide knowledge about quality resources to support the implementation of curriculum development experiences in the various areas of student activity. - To contribute to the development of skills in collaborative work, research and reflection on practices with a view to continuous improvement. - To foster the development of a positive attitude towards the teaching profession, including self-confidence in one's own abilities as a teacher and the creation of high expectations about what students can learn. This course will provide a qualification for teaching, supported by supervised teaching practices in educational contexts in the 1st and 2nd cycles of primary education, taking as a reference the Essential Learnings of these levels of education.

  • Learning objectives and skills to be developed

    The course provides a solid foundation of skills that allow: - Developing skills in managing the Basic Education curriculum, from a perspective of vertical and horizontal articulation, taking into account, in particular, the themes, learning objectives (knowledge, skills and attitudes) and strategic teaching actions of the teacher. - Building solid knowledge of the scientific and didactic content relevant to teaching in the 1st cycle of basic education and for teaching Mathematics and Natural Sciences in the 2nd cycle. - Developing the ability to plan, implement and evaluate teaching work, in order to promote the intellectual, social and emotional development of students. - Developing the ability to provide essential learning to students in the 1st and 2nd cycles, taking into account the areas of skills recommended in the document Profile of Students Leaving Compulsory Schooling and from a perspective of inclusive education for citizen participation in democratic societies.

    Recognition of prior learning is carried out in accordance with the Academic Regulations of the Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal.

  • Admission requirements

    Anyone wishing to obtain a professional qualification to teach in the 1st Cycle of Basic Education and Maths and Natural Sciences in the 2nd Cycle of Basic Education.
    Applicants for the cycle of studies leading to a Master's degree in Teaching in the 1st Cycle of Basic Education and Mathematics and Natural Sciences in the 2nd Cycle of Basic Education, in accordance with Decree-Law no. 9-A/2025 of 14 February, may be those who cumulatively meet the conditions set out in points 1 and 3, or those who cumulatively meet the conditions set out in points 2 and 3 below:
    1. Hold a Bachelor's degree in Basic Education from a Portuguese Higher Education Institution or, when from other institutions, prove it through a degree recognition process, in accordance with Decree-Law no. 66/2018.
    2. Hold a Bachelor's degree from a Higher Education Institution in Portugal or, when from other institutions, proven through a degree recognition process, in accordance with Decree-Law no. 66/2018 and meet the minimum training credit requirements, in accordance with the wording of article 4 of Decree-Law no. 9-A/2025 and the corresponding annex.
    3. Have an oral and written command of the Portuguese language and a command of the essential rules of logical and critical argumentation, obtained by passing a test with one of the following characteristics:
    Documentary test: having passed all the Curricular Units (CUs) in Portuguese Language, Portuguese Linguistics and Portuguese Didactics (a minimum of 20 ECTS) or equivalent CUs, at any Higher Education Institution (for this purpose, the certificate of qualification is considered to be detailed).
    Written or oral exam: taken within two years prior to the date of application, at a higher education institution.
