  • Degree objectives

    The Biotechnology degree will provide students with a basic training in fundamental areas of biosciences, as well as specialized training in the areas of chemistry, chemical engineering processes, biotechnology, microbiology and molecular genetics. There is a high demand for biotechnologists in Europe and Portugal, and this course will help prepare students for an exciting career in this field. In addition, the combination of skills and knowledge obtained provide a solid foundation for a wide range of employment opportunities or further study for master's or doctoral levels.

    The course was planned as a generalist degree in Biotechnology, ensuring a wide range of professional opportunities for future graduates. This training is especially aimed at students interested in pursuing a career in the biotechnology sector – either in large biotechnology multinationals or in the pharmaceutical industry or smaller companies, exploring new innovations in the field. The training in Biotechnology combines the laboratory skills and theoretical knowledge provided in the various curricular units and curricular internship or biotechnological project in order to prepare the graduate to enter the job market in various sectors such as Pharmaceutical, Food, Agricultural or biological/biotechnological research industries. This course allows access to the Order of Technical Engineers.

  • Career opportunities

    - biological/chemical/biochemical analysis laboratories;
    - biotechnological and related industries, of which the most important are Pharmaceutical, Food and Agri-Food;
    - environmental area, namely, in Treatment Plants, integration in teams to carry out Environmental Impact Studies,
    water companies, among others;
    - service companies in the sector and related, namely in the area of Medicine/Health;
    - technical assistance in Project and Consulting Offices;
    - integration, planning, automation and control of systems;
    - intervention in the production, development and control of final products of small and medium-sized industries.

    Recognition of prior learning is carried out in accordance with the Academic Regulations of the Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal.
